Zoning not Democratic, Constitutional

Dear Editor of THE GUIDE Newspaper, as I commend you for the able way in which you have been practicing Journalism in the classical tabloid newspaper, I also write to reiterate the fact about the boiling dilemma of zoning as regards the country's Presidency next year and to state it clear to all saber-rattling politicians that zoning is neither democratic nor constitutional.
The proponents of zoning arrangement are insisting that since the PDP zoned the presidential slot to the north under the Yar'Adua dispensation, the north will still produce the next president come 2011 to complete the 8-year tenure. Those opposed to it are arguing that zoning is an internal affair of the PDP which should not be binding on all Nigerians. As such, every Nigerian including the incumbent president Jonathan is free to vie for the highest political office in the land.

It will be recalled that zoning crept into the nation's political lexicon in 1998 when some PDP stalwarts agreed for power shift to the South-West geo- political zone to compensate them for the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election deemed to have been won by their Kinsman, M.K.O Abiola. It was assumed that the only way the country cold move forward was to appease the ghost of June 12 by allowing the south-west to rule. Hitherto, the North had dominated the nation's leadership from independence. Out of the nation's almost 50 years of existence as a self governing entity, the North has ruled for 38 years while the south ruled for 12, so if any thing like zoning should be upheld, then it should begin with the south.

However, majority of those opposing it are largely from the North while those in support are from the south especially the South-South which has not yet produced a president apart from Jonathan, who is currently serving the final stage of Yar'Adua's four-year tenure.

The whole dilemma of zoning portrays that Nigeria is yet to arrive at an acceptable political model. And Nigerians should know that the issue of who becomes Nigeria's next president will be based on track record performance and not necessarily where the person comes from and who ever it may be must depend on the choice of Nigerians and not by might. This issue also challenges the chairmanship of Proffessor Jega and his team who should ensure that the elections are credible, free and fair, because we do not want a rehash of the 2007 flawed polls.

Fr. Uwalaka's Social Tribune and its Impact

Taking a quick and instant Marathon Via memory lane through Fr. Uwalaka's Uwazuruike's Neo-Bafrianism (which later metamorphosed into a scholarly masterpiece), “when Peace is no peace” (which has just ended) and currently our point of focus, “Reforming and Reinventing the African mind, it becomes glaringly evident that the social Tribune of Fr. Uwalaka has become an African sting; making a supersonic impact through his role as a “gadfly” of our slumbering time.

His current article running now has become timely at the wake of the 21st century when the clamour for African Enlightenment and renaissance seem to be untenanted. In the recent past, there is the fact that the aphorism “Africa mentality” has been derogatory. But far from this, the mind is the defining element of man. As such the vehicle for the achievement of the aforesaid African re-birth is the mind. Hence the urgent task arises of re-inventing the African mind from the dungeon of re-orientating it to be the motor of development.

Indeed Dr. Uwalaka has tried to establish so far, that the mind is the life-world of civilization and societal development. The important function of the mind to generate ideas and knowledge is the underlying base of Bacon's knowledge is power. Hence knowledge has become the deforming element of development. Thus society can operate beyond its knowledge base.
Therefore, Good friends, Fr. Uwalaka's article has become a “Must-read' for all who have interest in remedying the pitiable state of the African continent. We are therefore optimistic that by the time this excavating write-up has come to an end, he would have successfully reconfigured the African mind for the proper conquest of nature.

The Credibility Of The German Octopus

Dear Editor, I write to affirm the credibility of the German oracle Paul who through the process of the world cup competition, made correct and resourceful predictions about the outcome of most German matches.

The octopus Paul predicted that Germany would win Argentina, England, Australia and Ghana and also German's loss to Spain and Serbia. He also predicted earlier that Germany would defeat Uruguay to hold the third place. The octopus likewise predicted that Spain would defeat Netherlands to win the World Cup, as such he never made any wrong prediction on any match.

According to the sea life Aquarium Manager, Stefan Porwoll, the octopus is a professional oracle whom the Germans are proud of.
The octopus developed his abilities during the 2008 European Championship in which he predicted five out of six games involving Germany correctly, but the World Cup brought the octopus international stardom.
